Getting to Montepulciano: Complete Transport Guide

Montepulciano sits on a hilltop in the heart of southern Tuscany, which makes it one of the most beautiful places in Italy — and one of the more interesting to reach. There's no train station in the town itself, no motorway exit around the corner, and no direct bus from Rome.

But it's not complicated once you know the options. Here's everything you need.

From Rome

By car: 2–2–2.5 hours via the A1 Autostrada (Rome to Chiusi exit), then 30 minutes on the SS146 through the Val di Chiana. The drive is straightforward and the final approach through the vineyards is genuinely beautiful. This is my preferred option for anyone arriving directly from Rome — pick up a rental car at Fiumicino Airport and you'll arrive with transport already sorted.

By train + bus/taxi: Take the high-speed Frecciarossa or Frecciargento from Roma Termini to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station (1h 15min–1h 30min, from €15 in advance on Trenitalia). From Chiusi, you have two options:

  • Bus (LFI/Tiemme): Buses to Montepulciano exist on paper — roughly hourly, 30–40 minutes. In practice, schedules are unreliable, services get cancelled without notice, and you'll be stranded if you miss one. Not a realistic transport plan, especially with luggage.
  • Taxi: Approximately €35–45 for the 30-minute drive from Chiusi station to Montepulciano. Pre-book if arriving on a weekend — there aren't many taxis in Chiusi.

Total door-to-door from central Rome: 3–4 hours by train + taxi. This works if you're staying in the town centre, but if you're renting a countryside villa, you'll need a car regardless — so just pick one up at Fiumicino and drive down.

From Florence

By car: 2 hours on the A1 Autostrada south to Valdichiana/Bettolle exit, then 45 minutes on the SP327. The fastest and most flexible option, especially if you're collecting a rental car at Florence Airport.

By train: Florence Santa Maria Novella to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme takes 1h 15min–1h 30min (Intercity services, from €10 in advance). From Chiusi, bus or taxi to Montepulciano as above.

Total from central Florence: 2–2.5 hours by train + taxi. The train is genuinely practical if you're travelling light and staying in Montepulciano town rather than a countryside villa.

Airports: Journey Times and Options

Florence Airport — FLR (Peretola)

Distance: Approximately 2 hours to Montepulciano by car.

This is the most convenient airport for a Montepulciano holiday. A good range of European routes (easyJet, Ryanair, Volotea, plus major full-service carriers). Car hire desks are on-site. Drive south on the FI-PI-LI motorway toward Siena, then the A1 south to Valdichiana exit.

Alternatively, take the tram into Florence city centre (15 minutes to Santa Maria Novella), then the train to Chiusi.

Rome Fiumicino — FCO

Distance: 2–2.5 hours to Montepulciano by car.

The largest Italian hub — most transatlantic and long-haul flights arrive here. Extensive car hire options on-site. Drive north on the A1 toward Chiusi, or connect by train to Roma Termini (Leonardo Express, 32 minutes) and take the high-speed service to Chiusi.

I recommend picking up a rental car at FCO rather than navigating into Rome city centre if your destination is a countryside villa. You drive out of the city, not through it.

Pisa Airport — PSA (Galileo Galilei)

Distance: Approximately 2.5 hours by car.

Good budget airline connections (easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air). From the airport, take the direct train to Pisa Centrale (5 minutes), then the train toward Florence/Arezzo and connect to Chiusi. Or simply hire a car at the airport and drive. The route takes you through the Crete Senesi — worth going slowly and stopping in Siena if you have time.

Perugia-Assisi Airport — PEG (Sant'Egidio)

Distance: Approximately 1.5 hours by car — actually the closest airport to Montepulciano.

The catch: very limited routes. Ryanair operates a small number of seasonal European connections (some UK routes in summer, plus a handful of others). Check before assuming this is viable — in many seasons it effectively has no useful connections. If there's a Ryanair route from your city, it's worth taking: the drive from Perugia is straightforward and the journey time is notably shorter than the other options.

Rental Car: Essential for Villa Stays

If you're staying at a countryside villa — which is most of the properties in our directory — a rental car is absolutely essential, not optional. Buses technically exist but they're infrequent, unreliable, and don't go anywhere near rural properties. Even villas described as "10 minutes from town" are on unpaved country roads with no bus stops. You'll need a car for everything: groceries, wineries, day trips, restaurants, and getting to your villa in the first place.

Book in advance. Car hire in small Italian towns is limited and expensive last-minute. Book through a comparison site (Kayak, AutoEurope) when you book your villa.

ZTL — read this carefully. The historic centre of Montepulciano is a Zona a Traffico Limitato (restricted traffic zone). Cameras at the entrance gates photograph every number plate, 24 hours a day. Driving in without a residents' permit results in an automatic fine — typically €80–150 — that follows you home via the rental company weeks later.

Here's what ZTL signs look like — learn to recognize them before you drive:

ZTL advance warning sign

Advance warning sign: ZTL zone ahead

ZTL zona traffico limitato sign

Full ZTL regulatory sign with hours and exceptions

Digital ZTL panel - active (red)

Digital panel: ZTL ACTIVE — do NOT enter

The digital panels (right) are increasingly common. When the red light is on and it says "ZTL ATTIVA," the zone is restricted. Some towns switch them off at night — but in Montepulciano, treat it as 24/7 and don't risk it.

Do not drive into the town centre. Park at Porta al Prato (the large free car park at the main gateway at the bottom of town) and walk up. Your villa host should confirm this and give you any relevant permit codes if your property is within the ZTL boundary.

Parking options:

Bus: The Local Option

The LFI (Lazzi Ferroviaria Italiana, now operating as part of the Tiemme network) runs local buses connecting Chiusi station with Montepulciano, Pienza and other villages in the Val d'Orcia.

From Chiusi: Approximately hourly service (fewer at weekends), 30–40 minutes, €2.50–4.00. Tickets available at the station tabacchi or from the driver.

From Bettolle-Sinalunga (the nearest station on the main line to some Florence services): less frequent service, but useful if your train stops here rather than Chiusi.

The bus is genuinely useful for:

  • Arriving without luggage
  • Day trips between villages (Montepulciano to Pienza, for example)
  • Returning from a winery visit without driving

It's not practical for groups with luggage, or for villa guests needing to reach a property outside the town centre.

Private Transfer Services

For groups of 8+, a private minibus transfer from Rome or Florence often makes more financial sense than coordinating 3 separate rental cars.

Several operators cover the Rome/Florence to Montepulciano route:

  • Italy Limousine** — reputable, English-speaking, reliable for airport transfers
  • Transfers in Italy** — competitive pricing for group transfers
  • Book a transfer on Booking.com** — compare prices and book airport transfers through Booking.com's taxi service
  • Local operators via your villa host — usually the most reliable as they know the road to your specific property

Expect €200–350 from Florence Airport or €350–500 from Rome Fiumicino for a group transfer in a 9-seater minibus. Split across 8–10 people, that's often comparable to or cheaper than equivalent car hire plus fuel, without the driving.

I recommend asking your villa host for their preferred transfer operator — they'll have relationships with drivers who know the local roads, including the unpaved white gravel tracks (strade bianche) that lead to many countryside properties.

Taxis in Montepulciano

For evenings out in town, winery visits or airport pickups, local taxis are your best option.

Taxi Montepulciano: +39 0578 716 393

Pre-book for evenings — availability is limited, especially in summer. Most drivers speak basic English. For groups of 8+, ask about minibus transfers, which several local operators offer as an extension of the taxi service.

Once You're There: Getting Around

Montepulciano is a compact hilltop town — the main Corso from Porta al Prato to Piazza Grande is about 800 metres. Everything within the walls is walkable.

For the surrounding area:

  • Pienza: 18km, 25 minutes by car
  • Chianciano Terme: 10km, 15 minutes
  • Siena: 65km, 1 hour
  • Florence: 125km, 1h 45min
  • Montalcino: 30km, 40 minutes (the scenic route through the Val d'Orcia is 50 minutes and worth every extra minute)

A car is the only practical way to visit the outlying wineries, the thermal baths at Saturnia or Bagni San Filippo, and the smaller hilltop villages that make this part of Tuscany extraordinary. If anyone in your group is uncomfortable with Italian country roads — narrow, unmarked, occasionally terrifying — the private transfer option becomes more attractive.
